Revere MA Community Profile & History
Revere, Massachusetts is a highly developed residential suburb on the Atlantic Ocean coast. Sixty percent of the city's 4,054 acres is developed for industrial, commercial, residential and transportation uses; of this total, 70 percent is used for housing. Almost 900 acres are open water or wetlands. Just five miles from downtown Boston, the city offers a convenient location, excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation, a thriving local economy and a bounty of historic sites.
Originally inhabited by Native Americans of the Pawtucket tribe, the community was settled by the Puritans in 1630. Once a part of Chelsea, the city was incorporated separately as North Chelsea in 1846, at which point it comprised the villages of Winnisemmet, Pullen Point and Rumney Marsh. In 1871, it was renamed in honor of American patriot Paul Revere. In 1775, the city made history as the site of the first naval battle in the American Revolution. Over the next century, the seaside community became a hugely popular summer resort, with amusements, restaurants, ballrooms, hotels and piers sprouting up along the shore. Although the resort areas declined in popularity during the middle of the 20th century, successful restoration efforts in the 1990s have revived the city's tourist economy.
The city lies within a short distance of all major urban amenities, including theaters, institutions of higher learning, museum and medical facilities. Convenient access is available to Logan Airport, downtown Boston, passenger and freight rail service, Routes 1,93, 128 and the Massachusetts Turnpike.
The city is a more complex community than most towns of its size, owing to its multi-cultural and diverse population, its older residential neighborhoods and housing stock and the numerous specialized regional facilities within its borders. The city is perhaps most famous as the home of Revere Beach, the first public beach in the United States and a popular summer destination to this day. Other attractions include Suffolk Downs, a horse racing track and Wonderland dog racing track.
During the past decade, an extensive system of parks has been developed and improved. Today, Revere offers several historical sites, including the home of Horatio Alger, born in Revere in 1832 and the author of 119 books; Ye Old Rumney Marsh Burial Grounds; Slade's Mill, the nation's oldest tidal mill; and Tuttle House, which was built in 1690.
